Description

Master artisans hand-engrave this Mount Tai celadon vase with a scene of the sacred mountain. Luqing celadon ranks first among the world‘s four great celadons. It originated in the Song Dynasty and was revived in 1972 in Zibo, Shandong. The artisans make it from talc and fire it at over 1300°C in a reduction flame. This creates a translucent, jade-like glaze known as “blue sky and white cloud”. Each kiln yields very few finished pieces, especially large vases, making them rare and highly treasured.

Mount Tai — The Most Revered of the Five Great Mountains

This Mount Tai celadon vase features a hand-engraved landscape of Mount Tai, the most sacred of China‘s Five Great Mountains. Since ancient times, emperors have performed the Fengshan ceremony at Mount Tai to offer sacrifices to heaven and earth. The mountain is known as the “Most Revered of the Five Mountains” (五岳独尊). It carries the weight of “guotai minan” — the nation’s peace and the people‘s well-being. For over two thousand years, Mount Tai has symbolized stability, longevity, and harmony. The mountain’s enduring presence has inspired poets, painters, and scholars throughout Chinese history.

The Vase Form — A Vessel of Peace and Prestige

This Mount Tai celadon vase features a classic tall vase form with a graceful, elongated body and a flared mouth. The form draws from ancient Chinese ritual vessels. In feng shui decorating, the vase itself carries powerful meaning — the word for “vase” (瓶, ping) is a homophone for “peace” (平, ping). It represents safety, tranquility, and harmony. Placing this Mount Tai celadon vase in the home is believed to anchor the space with stability and positive energy.

The Mount Tai Landscape — A Scene of Majesty and Blessings

This Mount Tai celadon vase features a hand-engraved landscape across its generous surface. The composition captures the mountain‘s iconic features — towering peaks rising through layers of mist, ancient pines clinging to weathered cliffs, winding paths ascending toward the summit, and the first rays of sunrise breaking over the eastern horizon. The artisan carves each stroke with precision, using only a few engraving tools and a small hammer. This technique, known as “using the knife as the brush” (以刀代笔), requires years of training and extraordinary patience. The jade-like celadon glaze provides a perfect backdrop, its subtle green tones evoking the misty atmosphere of the sacred mountain.

A Chinese Lucky Charm for the Study and Grand Hall

In Chinese culture, Mount Tai is the ultimate symbol of stability, protection, and enduring strength. The idiom “wen ru taishan” (稳如泰山) — “as stable as Mount Tai” — expresses the wish for a firm foundation and unshakable security. In feng shui decorating, Mount Tai imagery carries profound protective power. It is believed to “guard the home and secure the foundation” (靠山镇宅,基业永固). As the mountain that “guards the realm” (镇乾坤), Mount Tai is thought to bring stability to the entire household. A Mount Tai celadon vase in the study inspires scholarly achievement and career advancement. In the grand hall or living room, it anchors the space with cultural depth and protective energy — serving as a powerful Chinese lucky charm for the entire household.

The Art of Porcelain Engraving

Porcelain engraving originated in Zibo during the Qing Dynasty (1776). In 2013, Zibo porcelain engraving joined the Shandong Provincial List of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Master engravers carve intricate scenes into the celadon surface using only a few engraving tools and a small hammer. On a Mount Tai celadon vase of this scale, the artisan must maintain unwavering precision across the entire surface. Each stroke is permanent — one misplaced cut cannot be erased. The process requires months of dedicated work. The jade-like celadon glaze provides a perfect backdrop, its subtle green tones evoking the misty peaks and tranquil majesty of Mount Tai.
