Description

This Chinese scroll painting is an Ancestral Portrait Scroll — a revered ritual object used during major festivals to honor and remember departed family members. Known as “Jiatang” (家堂) or “Yingzhou” (影轴) in Chinese tradition, this piece serves as a visual family record that connects the present generation with its ancestors. Artisans handcraft it using the unique ash-rubbing technique from Gaomi, Shandong — a 500-year-old craft that survives nowhere else in China. In 2006, Gaomi ash-rubbing New Year painting was inscribed on the first National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China. The piece comes mounted on traditional rice paper and silk brocade.

Ancestral Portrait Scroll — A Family Heritage in Visual Form

The Ancestral Portrait Scroll, also known as the “family tree painting” or “ancestor scroll,” is a cherished tradition in Chinese culture. It serves as a visual representation of the family lineage. This piece follows the orthodox Qilu (Shandong) style, characterized by a strictly symmetrical composition centered on a grand ancestral hall. The painting is divided into three spatial levels from bottom to top: the front gate, the courtyard, and the ancestral shrine. At the gate, a pair of stone lions guard the entrance, with an ancient locust tree on the left and a pine on the right — symbolizing deep roots and thriving branches. Four generations — elders, middle-aged, youth, and children — gather in front of the gate, some leaning on staffs, others chatting, while children play with lanterns, creating a scene of harmony and joy. Above the gate, the chiwen mythical creature signifies auspiciousness and protection. Inside the courtyard, a shadow wall bears a rising sun, representing the family’s flourishing future. A deer and a crane appear in the courtyard, evoking the auspicious phrase “deer and crane share spring” — a wish for universal harmony. The ancestral shrine occupies nearly half of the painting, with a kneeling cushion at the center and ancestral tablets arranged in hierarchical order bearing the names of past generations. The vibrant colors, bold contrasts, and full figures bring the entire composition to life. The scroll embodies the values of filial piety, family unity, and respect for one’s roots.

A Chinese Lucky Charm for Remembrance and Blessings

In Chinese culture, the Ancestral Portrait Scroll is more than a decorative object — it is a sacred family heirloom that carries blessings from past generations. As a Chinese lucky charm, it serves as a reminder of the enduring connection between the living and the departed, inviting blessings of health, prosperity, and family harmony into the household. In feng shui decorating, placing this scroll in the living room or central hall is believed to anchor the home with the protective energy of ancestors and strengthen family bonds.

The Ash-Rubbing Technique — A 500-Year-Old Craft

The name “ash-rubbing” comes from the craft’s unique method. The artist first sketches the design with a charcoal stick made from willow branches. Then the artist presses rice paper over the sketch to transfer the outline. One sketch can yield several copies. After that, each copy receives individual hand-painting through dozens of meticulous steps. An Ancestral Portrait Scroll requires significantly more craftsmanship than ordinary New Year paintings, often involving fifty to sixty distinct procedures — making it the most intricate and time-consuming form of ash-rubbing art. These steps include line drawing, face painting, color application, gold outlining, and varnishing. The whole process demands patience and precision — a single scroll can take weeks to complete.

This Ancestral Portrait Scroll uses traditional xuan paper and silk brocade. These materials have served Chinese painting for centuries. They give the piece an elegant, formal look suitable for display during ceremonial occasions. At 150cm by 80cm, this generously sized painting commands a dignified presence. This slightly wider format is particularly well-suited for modern living room walls, offering a balanced and harmonious visual presence. It works beautifully in living rooms, ancestral halls, or family gathering spaces.
