The worship of Guan di as the God of Wealth is a significant spiritual belief in the Chinese business community. His historical prototype is Guanyu (also known as Guan Gong), a general from the Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period. The reason why Guanyu is venerated as the God of Wealth has deep historical roots! This does not stem from his ability to amass wealth during his lifetime, but rather from the fact that after his death, his spiritual core of “loyalty and righteousness” was ingeniously transformed by later generations into the moral code most needed by the commercial society.

In Guandi, “righteousness” and “trustworthiness” are held as the highest virtues. For ancient merchants, long‑distance trade suffered most from a lack of reliable credit guarantees, and Guandi, as the embodiment of “trustworthiness and righteousness,” perfectly filled that void. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the leading merchant groups, especially the Shanxi merchants, who shared a native‑place affinity with Guanyu, were the first to introduce him from a god of war to a patron deity of their trade. They enshrined Guandi in their guild halls, made contracts before his statue, and used the reverence for the deity to constrain each other’s business conduct, thereby reducing transaction risks.

This belief, which places the “way of acquiring wealth” above the “skill of acquiring wealth,” endowed commercial activities with strong moral legitimacy. It proclaimed to the world that following integrity and fairness is the right path to prosperity. For this reason, the faith in Guandi spread with merchants throughout China and even overseas, ultimately evolving into the universally revered God of Wealth in the Chinese cultural sphere, and a vivid portrayal of the simple wisdom in Chinese business philosophy: “pursue profit with righteousness.”

So Wealth of god Guan Gong, also known as Guan Yu, is one of the most venerated figures in Chinese culture. A general during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD), he is celebrated for his unwavering loyalty, righteousness, and martial prowess. Over the centuries, he became known as the God of Wealth— believed to bring prosperity and business success. He is also the Protector of Justice, guarding against evil and injustice. The name of t he skill this paiting is use Pu hui paiting(ash-rubbing) comes from the craft’s unique method. The artist first sketches the design with a charcoal stick made from willow branches. Then the artist presses rice paper over the sketch to transfer the outline. One sketch can yield several copies. After that, each copy receives individual hand-painting through over twenty meticulous steps. These steps include line drawing, face painting, color application, gold outlining, and varnishing. The whole process demands patience and precision.

The artworks are traditional Chinese scroll paintings executed on Xuan paper (rice paper), a material prized for its absorbency, durability, and ability to hold vibrant colors over time.
