Shou Xing – An Ancient Deity of Chinese Taoism

Shou Xing (the God of Longevity) originated as the Star of the South Pole (Canopus), a reddish star rarely visible from China, whose appearance was believed to govern human lifespans. Ritual sacrifices to this star date back to the Zhou Dynasty, and by the Han period, court astronomers interpreted its visibility as an omen of national peace or unrest—a view recorded by Sima Qian. During the Tang Dynasty, the star was personified as the Old Man of the South Pole, becoming one of the Sanxing (Three Star Gods) alongside the gods of Fortune and Prosperity.
