Handcrafted Shou Lao (God of Longevity) Chinese Scroll Painting — Folk Artist Edition

Description

Shou Lao: The Venerated God of Longevity & Health

In traditional Chinese culture, Shou Lao (also known as Shou Xing, the God of Longevity) is one of the most revered deities in Chinese folk religion and Feng Shui tradition. Representing health, long life, and familial harmony, his image has been a cherished symbol in Chinese households for over two millennia, bringing peace and wellness to senior family members.

The Origin of “Shou Lao” & The Three Star Gods (Fu, Lu, Shou)

The title “Shou Xing” originally stems from ancient star worship of the Old Man of the South Pole (Canopus) during the Zhou Dynasty. Sima Qian noted in the Records of the Grand Historian that the appearance of this star signaled peace and prosperity under heaven. Over centuries, “Shou Xing” evolved into the deity governing human lifespan within the Taoist pantheon.

During the Ming Dynasty, as worship transitioned into everyday domestic life, people affectionately adopted the endearing term “Shou Lao” (Old Immortal of Longevity). Together with Fu Xing (God of Fortune) and Lu Xing (God of Prosperity), Shou Lao forms the famous “Three Star Gods” (Sanxing, 福祿壽), bestowing complete life fulfillment upon the household.

Artistry of Gaomi Puhui Ash-Rubbing Technique

This Shou Lao Chinese scroll painting is handcrafted in Weifang, Shandong, using the unique Puhui (ash-rubbing) New Year painting technique—a recognized National Intangible Cultural Heritage of China dating back to the Ming Dynasty (1465–1487).

Traditional Artistic Highlights:

• Classic Auspicious Iconography: Shou Lao is depicted with a prominent dome forehead, snow-white beard, benevolent eyes, holding a dragon-head cane and a plump longevity peach, often accompanied by celestial cranes and pine trees.

• Intricate 20-Step Hand-Finishing: Artisans execute over twenty delicate manual steps—including facial powdering, eye outlining, lip coloring, and hair combing—giving Shou Lao a youthful, glowing complexion (“white hair and youthful countenance”).

• Vivid Northern Palette: Rich tones of vermilion red, gold, leaf green, and cobalt blue bring vibrant energy and festive warmth to any main hall or living room.
