Description

This copper celadon chinese tea tea set— cup holder brings together two of China’s most revered artistic traditions — hammered copper and Luqing celadon. The copper base is crafted through Wei County Hammered Copper, a traditional metalworking craft passed down through generations in Weifang, Shandong. During the Qing Dynasty, Weifang was home to “two hundred red furnaces and three thousand copper craftsmen” — a scale that speaks to the mastery behind every piece. In 2020, this craft was recognized as a municipal intangible cultural heritage of Weifang.

The ceramic insert is made from Luqing celadon — one of the world’s four great celadons, which ranks first among them. Originating in the Song Dynasty, Luqing celadon was successfully revived in 1972 in Zibo, Shandong. It is fired at temperatures exceeding 1300°C in a reduction flame, creating a glaze of translucent, jade-like quality known as “blue sky and white cloud.” In 1982, a Luqing carved porcelain desk set won the gold medal at the Munich International Handicrafts Fair — the first international gold medal for Chinese ceramics since 1949. The renowned poet Zhao Pucho once wrote in praise: “Lustrous and radiant, the Luqing porcelain — as if held by celestial hands.”

One Sheet chinese tea tea set— cup holder, Tens of Thousands of Strikes

The copper base follows a principle called “one-sheet forging.” The artisan starts with a single piece of high-purity copper. Through repeated heating and hammering — tens of thousands of strikes — the metal gradually takes its final shape. The process includes blank forging, design sketching, cutting, shaping, annealing, forming, and polishing. Historically, this technique was known as “hammering and shaping.”

Ceramic Insert in This Copper Celadon chinese tea tea set— cup holder

Set into the hammered copper base is a finely crafted Luqing celadon insert. The ceramic surface is smooth and gentle against the tea cup, providing a soft resting place that protects both the cup and the copper. Celadon is naturally heat-resistant and non-reactive, making it an ideal material for holding hot tea cups. The jade-like celadon glaze — known for being “green as jade, bright as a mirror, and clear as a bell” — creates a striking visual contrast with the rugged hammered texture of the copper.

Antique Patina on This Copper Celadon Cup Holder

The copper base features an antique patina finish that gives this copper celadon cup holder a rich, aged character. After the hammering process, the surface undergoes a controlled treatment that accelerates the natural aging of copper. This creates deep coloration with subtle variations — ranging from warm bronze to deep charcoal, with hints of rust and amber. The patina protects the copper from further tarnishing while enhancing the visual depth of the hammer marks and engraved details.

Hand-Engraved Motif — Artistic Detail on Copper

The copper surface features hand-engraved decorative motifs that add an artistic layer to this copper celadon cup holder. Using specialized engraving tools, the artisan carves intricate patterns into the copper — often drawing from nature and traditional symbolism such as floral designs or auspicious motifs. The engraved lines create a striking contrast against the rugged hammered background, adding both visual interest and cultural depth.

Double-Layer Structure — Enhanced Insulation and Elegance

This cup holder features a two-tier construction. The upper layer cradles the teacup with a slightly recessed center, while the lower layer lifts the entire piece above the table. This design creates an air gap that improves heat insulation, protecting your tea table from heat and moisture. The double-layer structure also adds a subtle visual lightness and enhances durability.

The Function — An Essential Tea Ceremony Accessory

The cup holder is a small but essential accessory in the Gongfu tea ceremony. Placed beneath each teacup, it protects the tea table from heat and moisture, catches drips or spills, and elevates the cup slightly for easier handling.
