Hand-Engraved Luqing Celadon Decorative Plate (Landscape) — Artisanal Edition

Description

Luqing Celadon: A Millennium Kiln Legacy

Among China’s legendary ceramic traditions, Luqing Celadon holds an esteemed place, celebrated worldwide for its lustrous, jade-like green glaze and translucent clarity. In 1982, a Luqing carved porcelain set won the Gold Medal at the 34th Munich International Handicrafts Fair in Germany—marking the first international gold medal for Chinese ceramic art since 1949.

Complemented by this mild and elegant glaze, the circular plate carries profound cultural aesthetics:

• The Harmony of the Circle (圓滿): Symbolizes family unity, peace, and fulfillment in life’s endeavors.

• Jade-like Elegance: Embodies modesty, tranquility at home, and the timeless oriental ideal of safeguarding the household with gentleness.

The Heritage Art of Zibo Porcelain Engraving

Porcelain engraving (Ke Ci) originated in Zibo, Shandong, during the Qing Dynasty (circa 1776), combining the elegance of traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, and seal engraving onto glazed porcelain.

Working with specialized steel chisels and miniature hammers, artisans execute delicate point-and-line strokes directly onto the fired celadon glaze. Because porcelain glaze cannot be erased once chiseled, every line demands absolute precision, controlled hammer pressure, and decades of muscle memory to prevent glaze chipping.

Artisanal Craftsmanship:

Created by experienced Zibo folk artisans—many trained through legacy state ceramic workshops in Boshan and Zichuan—each plate is individually carved by hand. These craftsmen master point-carving, line-chiseling, and textural shading to render mountains, flowing rivers, pine trees, and serene pavilions with permanent depth.

Feng Shui Symbolism: Mountain & Water Harmony

In traditional Feng Shui and oriental home decor, the landscape motif (Shanshui) represents the ultimate balance of natural forces:

• Mountains (靠山): Represent stability, strong patron support, health, and family longevity.

• Flowing Water (流水生財): Symbolizes continuous wealth, business opportunity, and the smooth flow of abundance.

Together, this hand-engraved landscape creates a calming, harmonious atmosphere, drawing protective energy and prosperity into living rooms, studies, or office spaces.
