Luqing Celadon Green Vase: The World-Famous Millennium Kiln Legacy
Among China’s ceramic traditions, the Luqing celadon green vase holds an unsurpassed international reputation, recognized alongside Longquan celadon, Korean celadon, and Japanese celadon as one of the world’s four great celadons. Originating in the Song Dynasty and revived in Zibo, Shandong, in 1972, this rare talc-based porcelain is fired at over 1,300°C in a reduction flame, creating a luminous, jade-like glaze known historically as “Blue Sky and White Cloud.”
In 1982, a Luqing carved porcelain set earned the Gold Medal at the 34th Munich International Handicrafts Fair in Germany—marking the first international gold medal for Chinese ceramic art since 1949. Renowned poet Zhao Puchu wrote: “Lustrous and radiant, the Luqing celadon green vase—as if held by celestial hands.”
The Double-Handled Celestial Globe Form (Tianqiuping)
Standing 40cm tall, this celadon green vase is shaped in the majestic double-handled celestial globe form (Tianqiuping, 天球瓶). Characterized by a full spherical body, a grand cylindrical neck, and two decorative handles echoing ancient bronze ritual vessels, the silhouette embodies cosmic completeness, balance, and formal dignity.
Blowing, shaping, and engraving a 40cm spherical celadon green vase requires extraordinary physical precision and decades of mastery. The expansive curved surface provides an ideal canvas for intricate master-level cold-engraving.
Children at Play (Baizi Tu): Symbol of Family Prosperity
The Children at Play motif (Baizi Tu, 百子圖) hand-engraved across this celadon green vase is one of the most cherished themes in classical Chinese imperial art, carrying deep spiritual and Feng Shui blessings:
-
Generational Continuity & Vitality: Children playing in garden pavilions represent abundant offspring, family health, and the continuous renewal of bloodline vitality.
-
Masterful Chisel-and-Hammer Artistry: Originating in Zibo during the Qing Dynasty (1776), porcelain engraving integrates painting, calligraphy, and seal carving. Working with steel chisels and miniature hammers, the master artist executes thousands of permanent strokes onto the hard glaze—rendering lively expressions, flowing garments, and garden scenery with unyielding precision.
