Description
Zhao Gongming: The Venerated Martial God of Wealth
Zhao Gongming (趙公明), widely worshipped as Caishen (the God of Wealth), stands as one of the most powerful and revered deities in Chinese folk tradition and Taoist pantheon. Believed to command financial abundance, business triumph, and divine protection against adversity, his presence has graced aristocratic halls, ancestral shrines, and prestigious businesses for centuries.
This masterwork is an authentic Xuan paper Chinese scroll painting executed with the sacred Puhui (ash-rubbing) technique from the Weifang region of Shandong Province. Recognized as a paramount Intangible Cultural Heritage of China, Puhui painting involves intricate charcoal sketching, manual soot-rubbing, and breathtaking multi-layered pigment application—creating a dignified divine portrait endowed with spiritual warmth and artistic immortality.
In traditional Chinese heritage, consecrating a master-painted portrait of Zhao Gongming during key festive ceremonies or in executive spaces serves as a profound invocation of prosperity, spiritual strength, and noble harmony.
The Mastery of National & Provincial Artists
Works within this tier are crafted exclusively by grand painters holding accredited titles such as Shandong Provincial Arts and Crafts Master. Their portrayals of Zhao Gongming are celebrated internationally for the unparalleled expressiveness of the deity’s gaze and majestic posture.
In oriental portraiture, the spirit (shen) of a deity resides in the eyes. In these master-level compositions, Zhao Gongming’s eyes possess a deep, commanding, yet benevolent warmth—creating an ambient presence that seems to maintain protective eye contact from any angle in the room. This extraordinary artistic execution bestows a profound sense of peace, divine favor, and executive confidence upon its collector.
The Divine Origin: Myth & Mythology of Zhao Gongming
The legend of Zhao Gongming’s ascension to the God of Wealth is famously recorded in the Ming Dynasty epic Investiture of the Gods (Fengshen Yanyi, 封神演義). Following the dawn of the Zhou Dynasty, the legendary Taoist strategist Jiang Ziya (姜子牙) conferred divine titles upon spiritual heroes under the decree of the Jade Emperor.
Zhao Gongming was invested as the Jinlong Ruyi Zhengyi Longhu Xuantan Zhenjun (金龍如意正一龍虎玄壇真君)—the “Golden Dragon Ruyi Lord of the Mysterious Altar.” His divine mandate was to welcome auspiciousness and govern all mortal treasures.
To fulfill his sacred duty, Zhao Gongming commands four celestial deities, each governing a specific domain of fortune. Together with Zhao Gongming, they form the legendary Five-Road Gods of Wealth (五路財神), capable of summoning prosperity from all cardinal directions:
| Celestial Deity | Chinese Name | Domain & Divine Authority |
| Zhaobao Tianzun | 招寶天尊 | Attracting Precious Treasures & Royal Jewels |
| Nazhen Tianzun | 納珍天尊 | Receiving Rare Valuables & Family Heirlooms |
| Zhaocai Shizhe | 招財使者 | Summoning Commercial Wealth & Enterprise Success |
| Lishi Xianguan | 利市仙官 | Profitable Trade, Investments & Market Prosperity |
Feng Shui Consecration & Executive Display
Zhao Gongming is both a divine protector and a guardian of enterprise. In classical Feng Shui, displaying a masterwork of Zhao Gongming facing the main executive entrance, grand living room, or private study creates an authoritative shield against financial instability while continuously drawing positive Qi (energy) into the domain.
During the Lunar New Year—particularly the 5th day of the first lunar month (the official birthday of Caishen)—collectors honor this sacred piece to welcome enduring wealth and family peace for the year ahead.
