Luqing Green Celadon Vase (Four-Sided Square) — National Masterpiece Edition

Description

Luqing Green Celadon Vase: World-Famous Millennium Kiln Legacy

Among China’s premier ceramic arts, the Luqing green celadon vase enjoys an unsurpassed global reputation, celebrated alongside Longquan, Korean, and Japanese celadons as one of the world’s four great celadons. Originating in the Song Dynasty and successfully revived in Zibo, Shandong, in 1972, this rare talc-based celadon is fired at over 1,300°C in a reduction atmosphere, producing a translucent, jade-like green glaze known as “Blue Sky and White Cloud.”

In 1982, a Luqing carved porcelain set earned the Gold Medal at the 34th Munich International Handicrafts Fair in Germany—marking the first international gold medal for Chinese ceramic art since 1949.

Four-Sided Square Form with Flame Handles (Gentlemanly Virtue)

Standing 40cm tall, this Luqing green celadon vase adopts the majestic four-sided square structure with distinctive flame-shaped openwork handles on both sides of the neck:

• Squareness as Moral Virtue: In classical Chinese literati culture, the square structure symbolizes moral nobility, upright integrity, and the steadfast character of a true gentleman.

• Dynamic Flame Handles: The curling, expressive flame-shaped handles break the potential rigidity of the square form, adding regal majesty and classical vitality.

• Four Independent Facets: The four flat vertical surfaces provide expansive canvases for master-level porcelain engraving, allowing viewers to rotate the vase to appreciate distinct scenes (Shrimp, Landscape, Flowers, and Calligraphy) from every angle.

Iconic Imagery: Free-Hand Ink Shrimp & Landscape Harmony

Carved using the national intangible cultural heritage porcelain-engraving technique from Zibo, this masterwork features free-hand shrimp motifs inspired by Qi Baishi’s world-famous ink painting aesthetic:

• Northern Protection & Southern Wealth: In northern folklore, the shrimp represents the dragon—a protective Chinese lucky charm warded against negative energy. In southern merchant traditions, shrimp symbolizes flowing silver and wealth creation.

• Bending yet Smooth Sailing (彎彎順): The curved, agile body of the shrimp implies that although life’s journey has twists, it will ultimately lead to smooth success, resilience, and personal fulfillment.

• Steady Advancement: The segmented body, mimicking bamboo joints, symbolizes steady, continuous progress in career, leadership, and personal endeavors.
