Description

This is a collection of artisan‑grade works, featuring representative pieces created by a group of folk craftsmen. The collection does not select works based on prestigious professional titles; greater emphasis is placed on the expression of craftsmanship itself.
Many creators are rooted in local communities, inheriting hand‑making techniques passed down through generations. They develop their personal aesthetic vision through day‑to‑day practical practice.
Every piece in this collection preserves the foundation of traditional craftsmanship while incorporating the artisans’ personal insights and ingenuity. The works carry a simple, native rural character, together with subtle traces unique to hand‑made creation.
Breaking away from the paradigm of mass‑produced standardized industrial goods, this collection showcases creations by ordinary folk craftsmen. It enables more people to discover the creativity inherent in rural handcrafts and builds a window for the display and circulation of traditional folk crafts.

Artisans hand-engrave these Luqing porcelain vases with a landscape scenery. Luqing celadon ranks first among the world’s four great celadons, alongside Longquan celadon of China, Korean celadon, and Japanese celadon. It originated in the Song Dynasty and was successfully revived in 1972 in Zibo, Shandong.

The body of the bottle features landscape patterns created using porcelain carving techniques.

This vase features a hand-engraved landscape across its surface. Mountains, flowing water, trees, and pavilions appear in delicate lines. The artisan carves each stroke with precision, using only a few engraving tools and a small hammer. Porcelain engraving integrates painting, calligraphy, and seal carving.

The engraved lines are permanent .

Engraved porcelain pieces often feature motifs of birds, beasts, flowers, and landscapes — each carrying its own symbolic meaning. These finely crafted works are more than mere decorations; they are treasured Chinese home decor pieces that nurture the spirit, enhance living spaces, and serve as feng shui blessings for harmony and prosperity.

Porcelain engraving originated in Zibo during the Qing Dynasty (1776). For detailed information about porcelain carving craftsmanship, please visit our craft introduction page.

Selected Works of Folk Artisans

This collection features works created by skilled artisans. Though they hold no prestigious official titles, they are the true foundation upon which this ancient craft has been passed down and sustained.

The sources of their skills can be traced along two main lineages. The first is the master-apprentice system within state-run craft factories. During the 1970s and 1980s, porcelain carving flourished in arts and crafts factories across China. Many folk artisans entered these state-run porcelain or craft factories during that era, where they received systematic training under the guidance of master craftsmen. Some artisans formally apprenticed themselves in the 1980s, building upon the skills inherited from their fathers while integrating other carving techniques with porcelain engraving. As the craft experienced a revival following the Reform and Opening-up, these artisans — trained in state-run factories — became the backbone of porcelain carving.

The second lineage is the intergenerational transmission within families. In places like Heze, Shandong, porcelain carving has been handed down through families — from father to son, mother to daughter — through oral instruction and hands-on practice. Some intangible cultural heritage projects have been passed down for five generations, with each generation adding its own understanding and innovation to the techniques inherited from their predecessors.

Unlike nationally recognized masters who seek to establish new schools of their own, these folk artisans remain grounded in everyday life and popular aesthetics. Their subjects draw from auspicious patterns, flowers and birds, landscapes, and historical figures — themes that resonate with ordinary people — rendered in a style that is both rustic and vivid. Though their works may not command the attention of museums or auction houses, they are cherished by collectors and home decor enthusiasts alike for their accessible prices and rich, lived-in quality.

These folk carved porcelain pieces represent the mainstay of the circulating folk craft market. Whether displayed in the home — on a living room console, a study desk, or beside a tea table — they bring a warm, refined cultural presence to any space. And as gifts for friends and family — for weddings, housewarmings, birthdays, or festive occasions — a hand-engraved plate or vase carries with it not only blessings of good fortune but also the unique warmth of the artisan’s hand. Far more meaningful than machine-made gifts, each piece embodies both a living tradition and the honest craftsmanship of folk art — imperfect, perhaps, yet filled with a warmth that masterworks often lack.
