Hand Blown Imperial Yellow Glass Gourd Vase (Hand-Engraved Landscape) — Artisanal Edition

Description

Imperial Yellow Hand Blown Glass: Royal Dynasty Heritage

In Chinese glassmaking history, Imperial Yellow Glass (Ji You Huang, 雞油黃) represents the absolute pinnacle of ceramic and glass artistry. First emerging during the Ming Dynasty and reaching its apex under the Yongzheng and Qianlong emperors, Boshan master glassblowers were enlisted by the Qing Imperial Household Department (Zaobanchu) to craft these luminous vessels exclusively for the royal court.

Prized for its warm, dense luster resembling golden hen’s fat, yellow was historically reserved for emperors. Today, this traditional hand blown glass technique is officially recognized on the Shandong Provincial List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Gourd Form (Hulu): Sacred Symbol of Fortune & Prosperity

This hand blown glass vase is mouth-blown into the classic gourd shape—known as “Hulu” (葫蘆) in Chinese—which shares its exact pronunciation with “Fulu” (福祿), representing divine fortune (Fu) and official salary/prosperity (Lu).

Feng Shui & Cultural Symbolism:

• Attracting & Retaining Wealth: The round, double-belly structure with a narrow waist serves as a sacred vessel, traditionally believed to absorb negative energy (Xie Qi) and trap good fortune within the home.

• Family Abundance & Harmony: Symbolizes thriving descendants, long life, and continuous health for all family members.

1,300°C Precision Hand Blown Glass Artistry & Engraved Landscape

Creating a hand blown glass vase of this caliber is famously unforgiving. Artisans fire raw mineral glass materials at temperatures exceeding 1,300°C, rapidly dipping, shaping, blowing, and rolling the molten glass before it hardens. Following a meticulous 10-hour annealing process, the piece is hand-polished until it reaches its famous standard: “Golden in color, mirror-bright in finish, and bell-clear in sound.”

Hand-Engraved Shanshui Scenery:

Once annealed, master engravers execute fine mountain-and-water (Shanshui) compositions directly onto the golden glass surface. The warm, luminous backdrop of the hand blown glass evokes the golden glow of sunset over misty peaks, creating a poetic dialogue between natural glass brilliance and traditional carving.
