Description

Oxidized Red Finish Hammered Copper Teapot Stand — A Surface of Depth and Character

This teapot stand is made using an ancient Chinese metalworking craft known as Wei County Hammered Copper. For centuries, artisans in Weifang, Shandong, have passed down this tradition from master to apprentice. At its peak in the Qing Dynasty, the region was home to two hundred furnaces and three thousand copper craftsmen. This scale speaks to the mastery behind every piece. In 2020, this craft was recognized as a municipal intangible cultural heritage.

One Sheet, Tens of Thousands of Strikes

The craft follows a principle called “one-sheet forging.” The artisan starts with a single piece of high-purity copper. Through repeated heating and hammering — tens of thousands of strikes — the metal gradually takes its final shape. The process includes several stages: blank forging, design sketching, cutting, shaping, annealing, forming, polishing, and finishing. Historically, this technique was known as “hammering and shaping.”

The Oxidized Red Finish — A Surface with Depth

What sets this piece apart is its oxidized red finish. After the hammering process, the surface undergoes a controlled oxidation treatment. This creates a rich, deep red hue that is both warm and earthy. The color is not painted on — it is born from the copper itself through a natural chemical reaction. The oxidized layer also provides protection against further tarnishing. As a result, the surface is more resistant to fingerprints and moisture, making it ideal for daily use.

A Living Finish — Evolving with Time

With regular use, the oxidized red surface continues to evolve. The patina deepens and shifts subtly over time, recording the passage of years and the touch of your hand. Each piece is unique. The hammer marks, the red oxidation, and the natural evolution of the surface all work together. Therefore, no two teapot stands are exactly alike.

The Function — An Essential Tool for Gongfu Tea

In the Gongfu tea ceremony, the teapot stand serves both a practical and aesthetic role. Placed beneath the teapot or gaiwan, it catches drips and spills, keeping the tea table clean and dry. Its sculptural presence adds visual depth to the tea setting. The rich red color also creates a striking contrast with the green of tea and the warm tones of wooden tea tables.
