Description

Hammered Finish Tin Tea Scoop — A Leaf Forged in Metal

This tea scoop (茶則) is crafted through the ancient art of Laiwu tin sculpture (萊蕪錫雕) — a traditional Chinese metalworking craft that originated in 1676 during the Qing Dynasty and reached its peak in the Qianlong era, when it was designated as a tribute to the imperial court. In 2008, Laiwu tin sculpture was inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.

The Material — 99.9% Pure Tin

Laiwu tin sculpture uses Yunnan tin with a purity of 99.9%, without any additives, preserving the natural properties of tin as a green metal. The finished piece is “silver in color, mirror-bright in finish, and bell-clear in sound” — a standard that has remained unchanged for over three hundred years.

The Hammered Finish — Texture That Follows Nature

The distinctive hammered surface is achieved through thousands of carefully placed strikes, each one a deliberate act of the artisan’s hand. The overlapping hammer marks — known as “hammer grain” (錘目紋) — follow the organic curves of the leaf form, creating a subtle play of light and shadow that shifts with every angle. The texture is not merely decorative — it mirrors the veins and surface of a natural leaf, making each piece feel alive in the hand. No two pieces are exactly alike, as the hammered pattern is as unique as a fingerprint.

The Design — True to the Leaf

Unlike stylized interpretations, this tea scoop takes its form directly from nature. The silhouette follows the gentle curves of an actual leaf, with a subtle taper toward the tip and a natural flow that fits comfortably in the hand. The shallow concave surface holds tea leaves perfectly, while the organic shape brings a sense of calm and connection to nature to every tea ceremony.

The Function — An Essential Tea Ceremony Tool

The tea scoop (茶則) is an essential tool in the Gongfu tea ceremony, used to measure and transfer tea leaves from the canister to the teapot. Its curved surface is designed to hold the perfect amount of tea for a single brew, while the flat base ensures it rests securely on the tea table without tipping.
